Figure 9. Land Utilization, 1994
Agriculture, forestry, and fishing, the components of the primary sector of the economy, contributed about 12 percent of Greek GDP in 1992, compared with 17 percent ten years earlier. A fundamental fact of postwar Greek development has been the sustained shrinkage of the role of the primary sector. Nevertheless, the primary sector, and especially agriculture, remains of much greater importance to Greece than to most other EU countries. (In the EU as a whole, the agricultural sector contributes about 7 percent of GDP). On the other hand, Greek agricultural productivity is estimated to be about half the average for the EU agricultural sector as a whole.
